PERFECTING YOUR PORTFOLIO (continued) 1. CHOICE OF ACTUAL,
PHYSICAL PORTFOLIO: For VISITING,
I like a 11x14 page size ………easily carried, visually pleasing, easy
to open on cluttered desks without toppling the slush piles off onto the floor.
show 9x12 page size is good too
Careful of RING BINDERS……PRATT type possibly best
MAILING:I use an inexpensive 9x12 self contained sleeved book
show Made by ACCO and others… Pg count 6, 12
2. REMEMBER……YOUR ARTWORK DOES THE TALKING….you do not want distractions getting in the way of this ‘talk’
Dummy: great idea to show you can ‘think’ a book Take a public domain story (careful about being trite) Cover and 32 page of b/w…show type awareness One finished piece to show style, color, saturation DO NOT COPY…show respect for copyright integrity of art And photography 3. WHAT? Never a single, correct approach to this = subjective. Good Buyers have the ability to ‘see’ something in an infinite Number of ways. Can’t show it all! Use common sense…..AND ALWAYS YOUR BEST PIECES *12-15 pieces………get into your objective REP self now! Be critical *CONSISTENT quality, character, technique, *Flow like Music – read like a picture book – pages feed off of each other if possible. Pages facing each other tell same story. I’ve heard the 1st and last page should be the strongest……….WOW FACTOR! *Don’t show work you don’t, or can’t afford, to do! *Think = ‘what am I evoking?” step back…see ‘forest thro’ trees” * “Good drawing, good composition, good color” -Toby Sherry, Dial *ACCESSIBLE = friendly, space, atmosphere, not too complicated << articles index | continued >> | << back |
